Pier One Award
Patterson Lakes
2011
Pier One is situated adjacent to a canal in the Melbourne suburb of Patterson Lakes. Despite the small 240m2 infill site, the design manages to encompass all the varied elements of the client's brief - exceeding expectations in many areas. The design breaks away from the other residences in the area. The large sculptural window is a standout design feature that injects natural light into the home while shielding against the hot westerly sun. The rock–like pattern used in the large window is also reflected in the concrete driveway which flows continuously into the garage.
Internal spaces are designed to feel spacious despite the narrowness of the site. The double height ceiling within the cavernous living room, draw in the marina environment connecting you to the surrounds. The addition of a crow's nest observing platform above, completes the picture.
The statement staircase becomes a light core within the house. Wall angles and glass reflect light down to the ground floor from the skylights at the third storey. The design maximises the northerly sun, lighting the property. Large full height windows and strategically located skylights direct natural light through Pier One, despite the solid concrete panel walls on the east and west.
